While part of the Citadel rules team I was the lead rules designer for this tactical combat game, based around a key event in the popular Horus Heresy narrative setting. I wanted to make it feel distinct from Warhammer 40,000 while still retaining the flavour. Part of the challenge was giving players the freedom to construct their squads however they wanted (part of the brief was to ensure the rules supported the players' ability to use the miniatures in games of Warhammer 40,000); I dealt with this by making sure that each weapon was interesting and unique, and useful in specific situations, but ensuring that no option was obviously better than another.
This game was produced by Games Workshop during my time as a writer / designer there. I was one cog in an impressive machine, sharing the workload with an incredibly talented group of artists, designers, writers, managers and many more.
